La Calavera Quicky: Mr. T Snickers Ad

This is one that had La Calavera laughing. The commercial was made but never aired due to complaints that it was homophobic:

La Calavera

Calavera Classic: Sir Mix-A-Lot "Posse On Broadway"

Este classic came on the radio while La Clavera was driving and he was like, as soon as La Calavera gets in he has to find the video and post it. Enjoy.

I Just Won Tix To See Wale @ The Roxy!

Yes, I'm actually going to this one, I won't forget to go, don't worry. I'm pretty hyped because its an X-Games party too!

La Calavera asks: Quien es D.J. KUBE?!?!?!?

First off. . . Did you know that La Calavera has a MySpace and that The Empire Kids have an Official Myspace place too?!?!? No, kiddin' I'm serious! Yeah, if you look to the right of the screen there is a little link on the side and you know, if for some reason you don't feel like leaving a comment here, then you can leave us a comment there. You can even become our friend.

Anyway, La Calavera got a friend request from this hombre called DJ Kube. Not really sure who he is or what he looks like, just know that his symbol is the gasmask. La Calavera loves the mystery. There's a few snap shots of him but nothing too clear. Now it's my mission to check out where Kube will be mixing next and after a few brief comments between both of us, he has allowed me to write a piece, I just gotta’ find him!!!! Check Kube out at:

http://www.myspace.com/djcube_the_great

So far La Calavera describes his beats as rough, dark, grimy, kinda clubby, and one with a heart. La Calavera loves The Imperial March (Darth Vader's theme) remix though.

Hasta La Proxima,

Still One Of My Favorites

Mad TV: Trapped In The Cupboard

La Calavera Quicky: Looks like Guy Ritchie is back.

La Calavera is picky when it comes to choosing his favorite films and directors. A year or so ago he thought one of his favorite directors had lost his touch. Guy Ritchie is the man responsible for, in La Calavera's opinion, two memorable cool crime caper films: Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. AND Snatch. Then he came out with Volver which, from the outside, looked as good as his two previous films but on the inside was missing everything that made the last two. . .good. Now, it looks like this Stella is getting his grove back with the upcoming film Rocknrolla. Here's the trailer and the Music video I'm a Man by Black Strobe. . . Because, you know La Calavera is a Man.

Best Video Of The Year

Gnarls Barkley "Who's Gonna Save My Soul"

  • There's some real talk in this video.

This video is also one of the best I've seen all year.

    Chemical Brothers "Midnight Madness"

    Wow!

  • La Calavera Quicky: Diggin' in those digital and physcial crates.

It's kinda like that feeling when you find that authentic great combo plate at a one-of-kind-cool-hole-in-the-wall Mexican food joint out in Downtown Riverside. La Calavera and his novia were just chillin' the other night, sampling records found packed away collecting dust, hidden in the dark corners of the garage, stacked underneath a vast amount of boxes that have been labled with the sharpie, and left alone to be forgotten. In one particular box, La Calavera's novia found a Quincy Jones/ Bill Cosby combo (this is where my analogy kicks in). The sound of the two is classic. Hikky-Burr was the orignal theme to the Bill Cosby Show. The instrumentals in the track are great and the scat singin'/ nonsense words of Bill Cosby add to the whole piece. La Calavera has heard that hikky-burr is la palabra used for the feeling one gets when one's going at it solo! wink wink, nudge nudge, kick in the ass. Anyway, this latino will now digress and let you, my faithful invisible reader, listen to that sound of which La Calavera speaks of. Enjoy. (this is where those digital crates come in, gracias youtube)

    Couple of Crazy Nights

The last couple of days have been fun, crazy, and tiring all in one..

Monday night, I went out to Moreno Valley, to a place called Pepper's Lounge where my boy DFib was djing. Steve Aoki was also supposed to be there as the headliner. I got there around 9:30 expecting a bunch of kids waiting in line, but all I saw was like 20 kids that looked like they were 16. By the time 10 o'clock rolled around we got word that the promoters were canceling the event because some 17 year old kid supposedly got caught by the cops in the parking lot drinking alcohol, and the cops told the owner that they couldn't serve liquor the rest of the night. There were a couple more stories that I heard why it was canceled too, but I don't know what to believe. Anyway, like 5 minutes later, so dude comes up and says we got another spot to throw an afterparty. It was a warehouse in Riverside. So we went there, and partied till like 2 or so.. I think it lasted longer, but that's when I bounced. It was cool though.

Tuesday nights was my weekly party at The Vault in Redlands, and we were celebrating my boy Rey's b-day.. It was so packed it was crazy.. DFib came through again, and spun with me, it was a lot of fun. All the homies came through, so I was happy!

La Calavera: Things that went and are going on in Summer 08.

    Photobucket

    Reboot in process. . . . . . . . . .
    System up and running. . . . . .
    50% of La Calavera Program recovered. . . . . .

Que onda amigo’s y amiga’s!!!! Well, this summer has been a bit slow, especially with the pinche economia being the way it is, but some good events have been poppin’ up here and there.

First off, if you haven’t done this already you should be checking out Dave C. over at The Vault in old town Redlands. Word is, he’s been spinnin’ some really good joints, drawin’ in the crowds, and workin’ them like Alex Rodriguez works Madonna. . .AYE!!!!!

    Photobucket

Here’s some events that La Calavera has attended over the past two months and info on events still going on (some free, some with just a little bit of dinero for either the tickets or the gas to get out there).

    The Hollywood Bowl

    Photobucket

La Calavera was sad. His woman and him missed out on their yearly 3 day outing to Coachella. But for a cheaper price he got themselves a three pack summer concert series at the Hollywood Bowl. . . and you still get that cloud of weed smoke blowin‘ your way, ain‘t nothing‘ like a second hand high! The first Concert was back in June featuring Devendra Banhart and Gilberto Gil from Brazil. The crowd was hyped, the vibe was chill, and it’s always cool to take a picnic basket filled with subs, drinks, humas and pita chips. Next concert in-line is this Sunday featuring Gnarls Barkley as the main act for the night. And the final one in September with Ozomatli and Nortec Collective. Tickets are always on sale ranging from $10 to $90, and there’s a concert almost everyday of the week. The only other expense that sucks is the gas it takes to get there. . .depending on what kinda car you own.

For all you movie buffs there is:

    Photobucket

Calavera? What is Cinespia? Well amigo y amiga, it’s a muy chingon way to see a classic/cult flick. This takes place every Saturday and Sunday at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Santa Monica Blvd in L.A., one of the oldest cemeteries in Hollywood where classic movie stars are buried. There’s a $10.00 fee for getting in and $5.00 for parking (if you decided to park elsewhere there’s also a walk-in entrance). So basically this is a spot where every hipster, movie buff, and eclectic kid rolls out a blanket on the lawn, sets up their picnic, eats, drinks, smoke’s weed, and chills to the sounds of guest DJ’s playing music that fit’s the movie before the movie starts. Gates open at 7:30p.m. and the movie starts around 9:00p.m. Two Saturdays ago La Calavera and his woman and his hermana and her novio checked out a screening of Easy Rider. DJ Small Town Talk was spinnin’ some classic 70’s psychedelic rock and folk that added to the atmosphere. Next in line this Saturday is “The thin man” and on Sunday “The eyes of Laura Mars”.

Calavera, what else is there? Well, La Calavera is happy you asked. Another super chido event was GLOW, a free public arts/DJ venue that took place at the Santa Monica Pier and adjacent area from dusk till dawn. Yes, from 7p.m. till’ 7a.m. HOMBRE, why can’t we have those types of events out here so we wouldn’t have to drive so far!!!!

    Photobucket

The event happened this past Saturday/Sunday. It was like an all night mini-Coachella. There were art instillations that lit up the night on the beach, the pier, and the promenade. Spread throughout the event were DJ’s mixing some electronica, ambient, trance, etc. with people dancing, camping out on the beach, enjoyin’ life. It’s good to get away from it all, especially if it’s gratis! If only we would had brought some sleeping bags. . . .

Constantly changing colorful light patterns on the ceiling of the carousel building with experimental electronic playing the background.

    Dancers in the Dark

    Photobucket

Santa Monica and L.A. in general always has some good free events going on, there’s the Do-Over every Sunday night, Glow, little cafĂ©’s and chill joints offering free live performances. Riverside now has the Pharos’ Den located in between The Grind Coffee shop and the Menagerie where up-and-coming artist perform, the Riverside Arts museum had a free art exhibit featuring some good music two Sat’s ago. It’s all good. Even though these are hard times right now, there is a lot of things that one can do to get out of the pad, they’re not hard to find, you just gotta look.

Alright, that’s it for now. La Calavera thinks he did enough writing to make up for his absence. Hope you all are doing bien and. . .

    Hasta La Proxima,

    La Calaveras #42

    Obama, Obama!

    This is kinda genius..

    Robin Thicke "Magic"

DJ Eli did a post on his blog recently about having a moment when you hear a song and you're like "oh snap, i didn't know they were white" when you hear the person sing. I get that moment every time I hear a Robin Thicke song. This is his new song "Magic". I like the soulful vibe in it, but I especially like the video, reminds me of some old Michael Jackson ish, "Rock With You" type stuff..

    Ron English's "Abraham Obama" Posters

I hear the city of Boston wants these taken down.

    To The Fallen Soldiers..

So, me and my boy D-Fib dj'ed at The Vault in Redlands tonight. As a dj, you have to deal with taking requests all night. Weird requests, dumb requests, and sometimes good requests that you were about to play anyway. It's ok, it comes with the job, so I'm not mad at people that request songs. Tonight we had a guy come up to the booth with a note saying he is a US Marine and him and 8 other marines just got back from Iraq yesterday and he wanted us to play a song for the fallen soldiers back there. I told him okay, and we turned down the music and stopped the dance party so he could recognize his guys, and he actually got claps and cheers. So the party gets going again, and this guy tells me that wasn't enough. He wants more, he wants a moment of silence. Me and D-Fib were gonna switch sets anyway, so I told him okay, we'll do it then. "No, I want it right now!" he says.. A couple songs later when we switched, I called out for a moment of silence. The crowd is looking at me like I'm the biggest party killer in the world, but I'm ok with it. Plus the guy said him and his boys would at least pay us money as a tip for doing this. So after the moment of silence this guy gets on the phone real quick, hangs up, and taps me on the shoulder again, while I'm trying to mix and says "Hey, my boys didn't hear it, you gotta do it again." So finally, I'm like, alright dude, you come up and you're demanding as hell. I respect you to the fullest, don't get me wrong, but come on, respect my job as well. I did all I could for you, but I can't keep stopping my party. Imagine if Michael Jordan is about to hit a game winning shot with 3 seconds left, and he stops playing and just starts calling out for a moment of silence. I apologize to any soldiers who read this and think I'm an asshole for my opinion about this, I respect everything that our troops do. My grandfather was an Air Force officer that was shot and killed in the line of duty, so I know how it is. Plus the guy didn't pay up either, he didn't really have to, but the fact that he didn't keep his word when I kept mine really pissed me off. But it's cool. Next time I ain't stopping my music for nobody.. (p.s. Some other guy before him came up wanting me to stop the music so his boy can get on the mic and start rapping. Dude, get a show booked, I'm a party dj, not DJ Premier)

Ok, I'm done. Peace. Support Our Troops!

Bentley ft. Kanye West & Andre 3000

I met Farnsworth Bentley a few years ago at Usher's 25th party. Even had a little dance off with him.. Even though he was a cool cat, I never thought that years later he would be putting out a track that kinda bangs. Check it out.

Ahh there's been a lot going on in the world of La Calavera, mostly in the form of familia type stuff, but worry not amigo and amiga. . .I shall be writting more witty, informational stuff. The Hollywood Forever Cemetery had a cool screening of Easy Rider that your's truly attended with some good people and there's been some good music comin' out of the bowl. I'll have the full story later, you know, just in case we do have some readers out there. . .which La Calavera scratches his head sometimes because there's hardly any comments!!!! For now enjoy this clip from David Lynch's Eraserhead. . .because, you know. . .in heaven, everything is fine.
