The 87 Stick Up Kids

In January, I won free tix to go to Check Yo Ponytail to see Million $ Mano, The Cool Kids, and the 87 Stick Up Kids.

Photo courtesty of Glenjamn.com

I had heard a lot about The Cool Kids, so I was inside checking them out when I get a text from my boy Anthony saying "Come outside". I go outside, and Anthony is out there chillin with members of the 87 Stick Up Kids. These guys are out there clowning each other, reminding me of me and my friends. They were hilarious dudes. Then I met the group's dj, James aka DJ Rockwell. He's a super cool cat, and one of LA's dopest dj's.
The 87 Stick Up Kids are now doing real big things, performing shows all over, and even being named one of URB magazine's Top 100. I like to say they're like a new school Beastie Boys. But check them out here, they're dope!

Meshes of the afternoon

The train I was in from former Yugoslavia to Paris, stopped in the dead of night. The wind blew kicking up the dirt which filled the barren landscape. The speaker came on with a crackle as the muffled voice of the conductor announced that there are drinks for purchase outside. The moon was nowhere to be seen and the only light eminated from the interior of the train cab shinning out, giving the clouds of dirt surrounding me a warm glow. There in the middle of this barren landscape was a solitary stand, a tall tent, with a man selling different clear bottles filled with colored liquids ranging from green to violet and all at room temperature. . .

I'm sorry, it's just today La Calavera has been in a David Lynch kinda mood. So I had me a marathon starting with Eraser Head and ending with Inland Empire. My brain is pretty much fried like some chicharones. Anyway, here is one of David Lynche's favorite short flicks which inspired him. It's a 1943 experimental film by Maya Deren and her husband Alexander titled: Meshes of the Afternoon. Yep, even back then they were smoking some good weed and making cool ass films. Maya Deren was truly a creative artist who was also a photographer, poet, dancer, and writer who went against mainstream Hollywood. Click on the wiki-link to find out more about the film and if you have thirteen minutes or so to spare, here it is (split into two parts)!

10 Rules For Success

1. Learn to fall in love with the pain of hard work, it’s much like the burn you get from lifting weights. The results of hard work is like the muscle repair.
2. Know that the pain is temporary
3. Every day matters
4. Return every phone call and email
5. Don’t let what you can’t do interfere with what you can
6. To get what you want, you must do things you probably don’t want to do
7. Know what you don’t know
8. Respect the commodity of persistence
9. The more successful you become, the more humble you should be
10. If you respect someone’s success, don’t feel ashamed to imitate their successful behaviors.

I saw this on Wale's site, and had to post it. It's awesome. I'm so thankful for everything that's been happening lately, and I thank everyone who has been part of it since the beginning, especially you Joe! May we all enjoy the ride that is about to start!

The Do-Over, Season 4, Sunday May 18, 2008

La Calavera has come to this realization: If we were to gather the greatest D.J.'s, one from every country, use 8 huge/very powerful speakers, and positioned them around the world; the war, violence, hate, greed, everything would stop and there would be peace, because. . .you know. . .everyone would just want to get down and dance!

Welcome to the Do-Over season 4.

Photobucket

Dave C had the lead this weekend starting over at the Standard Hotel on Saturday in L.A. enjoying the sun along with some pool side chillin' on the roof. La Calavera and his fine woman finally met up with him and our good friend Anthony on Sunday at the Do-Over.

Photobucket

It was 2:20 and the line was starting to grow with eager hipsters, hip-hop heads, and artists waiting to finish off a long weekend with some body-shaking music and cold drinks, and there ain't nothin' like a nice FREE tall glass of cerveza as soon as you enter the event.

The patio behind the building is where it all happens, the joint got packed faster than you can say KRS-1.

Everyone one was there to dance, break, head-bob, what was left of the weekend away. It's all about having that one thing in common, the love of music and the joy of meeting new people.

All that body heat was just warming everything up and the breeze that was blowing through as the sun began to set was welcomed with hands in the air. If you're ever looking for a place that will help you end the weekend right, The Do-Over is the place to go.

This Is Why I Love Nintendo

It's the biggest craze in Japan at the moment, about to hit the states. I doubt all the lazy fat kids here in America will want to get this game, but that's why we're the unhealthiest country out there. But anyway, I like the concept. Check it out..

Prefuse 73- Perverted Undertones

This Week La Calavera has been chillin' to the beats of Guillermo Scott Herren. This guy has been a long time favorite of mine. Which brings me to this track titled: Perverted Undertones. It has one of the chillest beats I've heard. La Calavera enjoys ordering his martini, sitting back on the patio at the lounge, popping in those i-pod earbuds, and watching the fellow lounge people pass by and converse, kinda like my own music video.

And speaking of videos de musica, La Calavera has come to realize that sometimes the Fan Based Music Videos can come out better than the official ones. There's some real talanted people out there. Here's an example:

The Barn over at U.C.R hosts a weekly concert series that goes on every Wednesday night begining at 6:00p.m. and ending around 9:00p.m. AND IT'S FREE TO THE PUBLIC. The concert series brings acts from in and around the Inland Empire. Last night they had an electro/indie night featuring Funeral Party (Indie Dance rumble from Los Angeles), Guns n' Bombs (Electro-Clash Dance Mashups), and D.J. Hyphy Crunk (Electro-Clash DJ from Riverside's Club Ave). Here's a quick blurb about them:

"The magic begins when the doors open at 6pm with DJ Hyphy Crunk. Hyphy Crunk is generating a real buzz at Riverside's Club Ave and this is his first performance at UCR. Up next is the electro-clash DJ spectacle of Guns 'n Bombs, well known in the LA area club scene and bringing their intense beats and mixing skills here to The Barn. Then, headlining for the night, we have a live set from indie dance band, The Funeral Party. The Funeral Party, described as "The Rapture meets Death From Above 1979," also hails from the LA area and will bring Riverside a night of fun they won't soon forget. The band has played with acts such as Crystal Castles and Health and has been featured on Indie 103.1fm's popular show "Neon Noise" 103.1, known for bringing the best of the electro scene to the radio airwaves."

Kind Of Disturbing

Saw this on CNN the other day. A Western Indian ritual with cats dropping babies 50 feet for good luck.. Wow.

Hand Springs

I took my girl to go bowling downtown at the red door
after an argument I started
cause I thought she didn't like me anymore
I can't help it sometimes I feel pitiful
and of course she's so young and beautiful

I bought us two glasses of coke
that's her favorite and I wanted to make up for earlier
but I dropped her glass and it broke
so I just gave my glass to her

she laughed and so did I in our lane
and then she went to a vending machine
to buy a candy cane
but right next to that was a boy I knew
with a spring in his hand
playing a country pinball machine
called 'stand by your man'
I saw him talk to her
but I stayed in my lane
and played my game steady
and was thinking of a day
when I'd be too old to throw a ball this heavy

but I guess I'm young now
so it's easier to knock 'em all down
then I looked and saw her say to him
'you're really hittin' that ball around'
and he's lookin' at her the way I did
when I first met her
I could see in his face
white flowers
and cups of coffee
and love letters

I was sorry to interrupt their game
but I went and did it anyway
I dropped my red bowling ball
through the glass of his machine
I said 'are you quick enough to hit this ball, mr. clean?'
I was scared to lose her
so I couldn't help being mean

and that ended both of our games
I said I was sorry
but my girl left with him just the same
I thought how much I hate when love makes me act this way
I was bent over a broken pinball machine
in a bowling alley and I threw it all away

well isn't it all just a big game?
